During his victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware, Mr Biden reached out to president Donald Trump’s supporters. “Let’s give each other a chance and stop treating each other like enemies. We are not enemies. We are Americans. This is the time to heal,” he said. Mr Biden also honoured his wife, Dr Jill Biden, his sons, Beau and Hunter, and his daughter Ashley in his speech.

Crowds of Biden supporters gathered outside Mr Trump’s Virgina golf club when the race was called, singing “Hey hey hey, goodbye” and chanting “Lock him up!”

Mr Trump later re-entered the White House wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, looking glum, while Biden supporters celebrated loudly nearby.

Current Electoral College votes per candidate (270 to win):
Joe Biden: 290
Donald Trump: 214

- Joe Biden will be the 46th President of the United States after his victory was called yesterday by all major news networks

- Biden makes first address as President Elect: “I pledge to be a President who seeks not to divide, but to unify. Who doesn’t see Red and Blue states, but a United States.”

- News sparks scenes of celebration in cities across the country, most notably in Democrat-leaning areas like New York, Washington DC and Philadelphia

- Biden to give Trump time before he pushes forward on transition. Trump says it’s far from over, refuses to concede and sites unspecified pending lawsuits

-Along with AP we have called Arizona (11) for Biden, though many agencies say too close to call, not that it matters; without Arizona Biden’s current electoral college total is still 279

- Congratulations pour in for Joe Biden, President-elect. Including cautious commendation from Barack Obama, who said “Enjoy this moment. Then stay engaged”

- Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, LeBron James and Beyonce celebrate Biden’s win.

-Trump’s fellow Republicans split between supporting his lack of conceit or congratulating Democrats’ win

- CNN project Trump wins one additional electoral vote in Maine, one of two states that splits its Electoral College votes

- White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has tested positive for covid-19, and Ja’Ron Smith resigned before news broke of Biden’s win

- In 27 states there have been more coronavirus cases announced in the past week than in any other seven-day stretch since the pandemic began

Joe Biden will be bringing dogs back into the White House for the first time in four years.

The president-elect owns two German Shepherds, Champ and Major.

Donald Trump does not have a dog, and told a rally in 2019 the idea of owning one seemed “phony”.

“I wouldn’t mind having one, honestly, but I don’t have any time. How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn?” he said.

“I don’t know, I don’t feel good. Feels a little phony to me.”

Twelve hours after news networks in the US called Joe Biden the victor in the race for the White House, Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered his congratulations to Mr Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris.

In a tweet, Mr Netanyah pointed to his “long and warm personal relationship” with the president-elect and described him as a “great friend of Israel”.

Here is the full story:

Crowds flooded the streets across the US to celebrate as news broke of Joe Biden’s win, particularly in the battleground key states that have carried the Democrat into the White House.

From Philadelphia and New York to Chicago and Atlanta, crowds celebrated Trump’s defeat and hoped for a new political era in America.

Boris Johnson congratulates Biden

British prime minister Boris Johnson has congratulated Joe Biden for his US election victory.

He said: “I congratulate president-elect Biden very much on his victory and, of course, I congratulate Kamala Harris on being the first female vice president, as she will become, in the history of the United States.

“The United States is our closest and most important ally, and that has been the case president after president, prime minister after prime minister — it won’t change.

“I look forward very much to working with President Biden and his team on a lot of crucial stuff for us in the weeks and months ahead: tackling climate change, trade, international security, many, many other issues.”

Biden will have ‘no greater ally’ than UK

British foreign secretary Dominic Raab has said Joe Biden will have no closer ally than the UK.

He told Sky News: “I am very confident from climate change to cooperation on coronavirus and counter-terrorism there is a huge bedrock of underlying interests and values that binds us very closely together.

“He (Biden) will have no greater ally, no more dependable friend than the United Kingdom.”

Conservative MP Sajid Javid echoed the sentiment, calling the election the “best outcome” for Britain and predicting that UK prime minister Boris Johnson had a much better chance of sealing a trade deal under Mr Biden rather than the “protectionist” Mr Trump.

Turkey says US relations will not change

Turkey has given an impassive first reaction to Joe Biden’s presidential win, with vice president Fuat Oktay saying it would not change relations between the old allies, although Ankara will keep pressing Washington on Syria and other policy differences.

Speaking to broadcaster Kanal 7, Mr Oktay said that while the friendship between Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan and Donald Trump had helped the countries tackle several of their issues, communications channels between Ankara and Washington would operate as before.

“Nothing will change for Turkey,” he said. “The channels of communication will work as before, but of course there will be a transition period.”

Analysts say Turkey-US ties could suffer under a Biden presidency. The lira, which is already trading at a record low against the dollar, could come under more pressure.

President Erdogan has not yet commented on Mr Biden’s victory.

Iran calls on Biden to rejoin 2015 nuclear deal

Iran’s president has apparently called on president-elect Joe Biden to “compensate for past mistakes” and return the US to Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, a state-run news agency has reported.

“Now, an opportunity has come up for the next US administration to compensate for past mistakes and return to the path of complying with international agreements through respect of international norms,” the state-run IRNA news agency quoted him as saying.

Under Donald Trump, tensions between the US and Iran have escalated, reaching fever-pitch earlier this year. One of Mr Trump’s signature foreign policy moves was unilaterally withdrawing the US from Iran’s nuclear deal in 2018, which had seen Tehran limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
